 'andbike' is an online bicycle community sharing information all about cycling in Korea.

We share any information related to cycling.  Bicycles themselves (products, parts, accessories), infrastructure, national policies, cyclist's culture, and a lot more.  We furnish information systematically.

 

Cycling in Korea

Cycling is necessary for many reasons, but lack of infrastructure and recognition about cycling culture by the citizens are the main problems in Korea.  Paradoxically speaking, we see big potential to improve this situation because we know what the problems are.

For leisure, cycling is quite common in Korea.  There are many activities related to it.  More people have become interested in incorporating cycling into their weekend plans since employees of Korean companies started working just 5 days a week recently (They used to work 5 and a half days).

BUT, cycling as a transportation means is very low.  The main reason is insufficient infrastructure, the core of which is the government's policy.  As you can see through the research data on our website,  a huge number of willing cyclists would commute by bicycle if the infrastructure were sufficient.  

Government and autonomous local entities recognize this fact and are now making regulations and improving circumstance.

Korea is famous for the world wide power of its internet users.  Most Koreans get the information they need through the internet.  First-rate internet infrastructure, first-rate Internet diffusion rate in the world, that's Korea.  Now, Koreans want information about cycling and bikes themselves.

Korea has a thirst for information about bicycles, cycling infrastructure and advanced cycling culture..

 

The Present and Future with Cycling

Consuming the earth's limited fossil fuel energy has massive problems, and this is every human being's homework which must be solved.  One of human beings' great inventions, the bicycle is widely used for diverse purposes and in various designs.

The bicycle has been developed and improved greatly both mechanically and culturally since it was first invented in the 19th century.  The original purpose of using it was as a means of transportation, but subsequent usage of bicycles has become much broader.  Leisure, transportation means, community activity, working ware, sports.  Cycling is even an Olympic event.

Among these purposes we should pay more attention to cycling as a transportation means.  WHY?  Cycling is a great answer to save the environment for human beings.

Environmental issues are human being's big homework for survival.  Global warming is bringing and will continue to bring unusual changes throughout the world.  Developed countries strive to develop alternative energies, yet car sales increase every year.  Last year (2006) about 70 million cars were sold.  How much poisonous exhaust fumes will be discharged?  How many resources from the earth were consumed to make the cars?  Dare to imagine, but let's think about it.

Fossil fuel cars discharge CO (Carbon Monoxide), HC (Hydrocarbon), NOX (Oxidized Nitrogen), dust and so forth.  

CO (Carbon Monoxide) can cause headache, dizziness and can lead to death due to lack of oxygen. HC (Hydrocarbon) can stimulate mucosa, break tissue and cause photochemical smog.  Imperfect combustion of gasoline is discharged. NOX (Oxidized Nitrogen) can cause oxygen deficiency, declining the central nerve function and photochemical smog.

Exhaust fume control regulations are enforced in Korea and internationally.  To help this, diverse research is ongoing.  But this isn't the fundamental solution.

YES, we agree that fossil fuel transportation is needed in some cases, but in many cases, we can use bicycles instead.  It will make a big difference.

 

Benefits of Cycling

Cycling has an infinite number of benefits.  On an individual level, it is good for maintaining one's health.  One can exercise while having fun.  If he/she cycles as a means of transportation, he/she doesn't have to make extra time to exercise.

We have limited living space.  Enlarging car parking spaces and roads is not the fundamental solution for congestion and parking troubles.  Cycling reduces the need for more space for cars.

Cycling is silent.  You know how noisy it is to walk a footpath along a road and to work in an office near a road.  More cycling brings a more peaceful environment.

Cycling is clean air.  It is the most important reason why we should choose cycling over driving a car.  Global warming is not the next generations' problem.  It is ours, this generation's problem.  Cycling produces no harmful emissions.  It doesn't consume any of our limited energy (e.g. fossil fuels).  Cycling saves such energy for absolutely necessary purposes.  

As time goes by the necessity of cycling is increasing.
